Intro & Fish Cakes & Corn

Hello! My name is Danielle.

Today is my birthday. To celebrate this birthday, I thought I would create a birthday for something else - a baby food blog!

I'm a pescetarian with gluten-free tendencies, I love to cook, and this year I am doing so in a small dorm kitchen, with a college-student budget. On this blog, I'm going to post lots of the fun meals I make, with the hope to inspire other college students to create healthy habits while at school, even though unhealthy, more convenient foods can be oh so tempting.

This is my (really awesome) roommate Amanda.

She likes to cook too. And bake. Sometimes she will also post the deliciously easy and healthy foods that she whips up in our kitchen.

So let's get started, shall we?

Yesterday was the real celebration of my birthday. I went to ABC Kitchen with my parents, and it was just fabulous.

Before going back to school, my parents and I went to Zabars, where my mom insisted I get whitefish sliders, kindof like fish cakes that she swore were amazing. So that was my dinner tonight.

I had the fish cake with corn, which I got at the Columbia greenmarket. Corn is a great side dish, because it's super cheap and filling. On Thursday I got three corns for $1, aka three side dishes for that price. You can tell if corn is ready because the husk will become moist. I used one on the day I bought, and then put the other two in the fridge. Corn can last for a few days and still be good, so if you have a weekly farmers market, I would definitely keep buy and keep some around for the week, because it's quick to make (just drop it in boiling water), and so yummy!

For dessert, Amanda bought me an almond horn (one of my absolute favorite cookies) from Hungarian Pastry Shop, a local dessert place/coffee shop.

I might have nibbled at some before photographing...

Then, as a birthday gift, my friends got me an awesome cookbook, Veganomicon. I've already bookmarked a whole bunch of recipes that I can't wait to try out!

I might have also had a frappuccino as a birthday present from Starbucks. But that's the thing about this blog - this is about healthy living, not dieting. So if it is your birthday, and Starbucks sends you a postcard in the mail for a free drink, and you want a venti salted caramel mocha frappuccino, then I think you should have one! (as I did).
